    Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated XYXY model

    The fully frustrated XYXY model on a square lattice is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at TKT≈0.446T_{\rm KT} \approx 0.446, followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly higher temperature, Tc≈0.452T_c \approx 0.452. The non-Ising exponents reported by others, are explained as a failure of finite size scaling due to the screening length associated with the nearby Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.Comment: REVTEX file, 8 pages, 5 figures in uuencoded postscrip

    New, efficient, and accurate high order derivative and dissipation operators satisfying summation by parts, and applications in three-dimensional multi-block evolutions

    We construct new, efficient, and accurate high-order finite differencing operators which satisfy summation by parts. Since these operators are not uniquely defined, we consider several optimization criteria: minimizing the bandwidth, the truncation error on the boundary points, the spectral radius, or a combination of these. We examine in detail a set of operators that are up to tenth order accurate in the interior, and we surprisingly find that a combination of these optimizations can improve the operators' spectral radius and accuracy by orders of magnitude in certain cases. We also construct high-order dissipation operators that are compatible with these new finite difference operators and which are semi-definite with respect to the appropriate summation by parts scalar product. We test the stability and accuracy of these new difference and dissipation operators by evolving a three-dimensional scalar wave equation on a spherical domain consisting of seven blocks, each discretized with a structured grid, and connected through penalty boundary conditions.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures.     Critical exponent \eta_\phi of the Lattice London Superconductor and vortex loops in the 3D XY model

    The anomalous dimension of the lattice London superconductor is determined from finite size scaling of the susceptibility to be \eta_\phi = -0.79(1). Indirect determinations of \eta_\phi from properties of the vortex loops in the 3D XY model are also attempted, but it is found that the results are sensitive to details in the simulations related to vortex loop intersections. It is suggested that the same value of \eta_\phi can at most be obtained from vortex loop properties in the limit of low vortex density

    Rheology and dynamical heterogeneity in frictionless beads at jamming density

    We investigate the rheological properties of an assembly of inelastic (but frictionless) particles close to the jamming density using numerical simulation, in which uniform steady states with a constant shear rate γ˙\dot\gamma is realized. The system behaves as a power-law fluid and the relevant exponents are estimated; e.g., the shear stress is proportional to γ˙1/δS\dot\gamma^{1/\delta_S}, where 1/δS=0.64(2)1/\delta_S=0.64(2). It is also found that the relaxation time τ\tau and the correlation length ξ\xi of the velocity increase obeying power laws: τ∼γ˙−β\tau\sim\dot\gamma^{-\beta} and ξ∼γ˙−α\xi\sim\dot\gamma^{-\alpha}, where β=0.27(3)\beta=0.27(3) and α=0.23(3)\alpha=0.23(3)

    Boundary Effects on Dynamic Behavior of Josephson-Junction Arrays

    The boundary effects on the current-voltage characteristics in two-dimensional arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions are examined. In particular, we consider both the conventional boundary conditions (CBC) and the fluctuating twist boundary conditions (FTBC), and make comparison of the obtained results. It is observed that the CBC, which have been widely adopted in existing simulations, may give a problem in scaling, arising from rather large boundary effects; the FTBC in general turn out to be effective in reducing the finite-size effects, yielding results with good scaling behavior. To resolve the discrepancy between the two boundary conditions, we propose that the proper scaling in the CBC should be performed with the boundary data discarded: This is shown to give results which indeed scale well and are the same as those from the FTBC.Comment: RevTex, Final version to appear in Phys. Analysis of recent high precision pion-nucleon data has widened the gap between the two determinations.     Current-voltage characteristics of the two-dimensional XY model with Monte Carlo dynamics

    Current-voltage characteristics and the linear resistance of the two-dimensional XY model with and without external uniform current driving are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We apply the standard finite-size scaling analysis to get the dynamic critical exponent zz at various temperatures. From the comparison with the resistively-shunted junction dynamics, it is concluded that zz is universal in the sense that it does not depend on details of dynamics.     Identifying Agile Requirements Engineering Patterns in Industry

    Agile Software Development (ASD) is gaining in popularity in today´s business world. Industry is adopting agile methodologies both to accelerate value delivery and to enhance the ability to deal with changing requirements. However, ASD has a great impact on how Requirements Engineering (RE) is carried out in agile environments. The integration of Human-Centered Design (HCD) plays an important role due to the focus on user and stakeholder involvement. To this end, we aim to introduce agile RE patterns as main objective of this paper. On the one hand, we will describe our pattern mining process based on empirical research in literature and industry. On the other hand, we will discuss our results and provide two examples of agile RE patterns. In sum, the pattern mining process identifies 41 agile RE patterns.     Vortex dynamics for two-dimensional XY models

    Two-dimensional XY models with resistively shunted junction (RSJ) dynamics and time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) dynamics are simulated and it is verified that the vortex response is well described by the Minnhagen phenomenology for both types of dynamics. Evidence is presented supporting that the dynamical critical exponent zz in the low-temperature phase is given by the scaling prediction (expressed in terms of the Coulomb gas temperature TCGT^{CG} and the vortex renormalization given by the dielectric constant ϵ~\tilde\epsilon) z=1/ϵ~TCG−2≥2z=1/\tilde{\epsilon}T^{CG}-2\geq 2 both for RSJ and TDGL and that the nonlinear IV exponent a is given by a=z+1 in the low-temperature phase.
